Prologue
“Are you sure?” he asked solemnly.
“Yes,” I answered in rasping breaths. “Positive.”
“It’s going to be about twenty-four hours of absolute agony,” he stated.
If I could possibly have laughed, I would have. What exactly did he think I was in? What exactly did he think I had endured when my mother died? What exactly did he think my life has consisted of since he had left? Nothing but pain, almost three hundred years of it. I just looked at him and he nodded knowingly.
He stared into my eyes and mouthed the words, ‘I love you, Hannah.’ Then he leaned towards me and kissed me softly on the lips, kissed me gently on the cheek, and kissed me gently on the neck before saying, “May the angels forgive me.” Then I felt the sting as he sunk his teeth in.
